60 Minutes

This presentation will present several examples of the vital role that data plays in the development and application of emerging technologies.

Data is the source of inputs, insights, and intelligent actions for most (if not all) digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, 4-D printing, digital twins, autonomous data-driven application systems (including self-driving cars and drones), and more.

Machine learning provides the algorithmic foundation and computational tool set for many of these capabilities, and data science is the scientific methodology and data-driven process that underpins all of this.

Data science thrives and depends on an experimentation mindset within individuals and within organizations. This culture is a way of thinking, a way of life, and a way of doing things, and it empowers all digital workers to transform data into value for their organizations and for themselves.

Transforming data-to-value includes insights discovery, informed decision support, and intelligent next-best action.

This presentation aims to inform, inspire, and ignite data uses by anyone and everyone who is part of that value chain that is now connecting data (the inputs) to emerging digital technologies (the value-packed outcomes) across all disciplines and industries.

Speaker Kirk Borne

Dr. Kirk Borne is a data scientist and astrophysicist. He has been at global technology and consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton since 2015, where his roles include Principal Data Scientist, Data Science Fellow, and Executive Advisor. He provides thought leadership, mentoring, training, and consulting activities in data science, machine learning, and AI across multiple disciplines. Previously, he was Professor of Astrophysics at George Mason University for 12 years in the graduate and undergraduate Data Science degree programs. Prior to that, he spent nearly 20 years supporting data systems activities for NASA space science programs, including a role as NASA’s Data Archive Project Scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope. He is an active contributor on social media, where he has been named consistently among the top worldwide social influencers in big data, data science, machine learning, and AI since 2013. Since 2019, he has been identified as the #1 worldwide digital influencer by IPFConline Web Agency. He is an elected Fellow of the International Astrostatistics Association "for lifelong contributions to big data research in astronomy", and in 2020 he was elected Fellow of the American Astronomical Society "for achievement and extraordinary service to the field of astronomy, and for contributions toward enhancing and sharing humanity's scientific understanding of the universe."
