A Fortune 500 gas and electric utility company cleans up conflation with new workflow management.

SITUATION

Our client, a Fortune 500 Gas and Electric Utility, sought to improve their electric landbase GIS mapping following a flawed data merge that left them with numerous inaccuracies. This, in turn, generated a substantial volume of gas and electric work orders. The client needed to validate and complete these work orders prior to previously set conflation deadlines but did not have the available workforce to accomplish this goal.

The project was completed over $6,000 under budget.

SOLUTION

The client engaged Apex for expertise in Geospatial Managed Services to clean up their GIS datasets and to resolve the inordinately large number of work orders in their system. We deployed a team of eight consultants, managed by an engagement manager and a project coordinator. The consultants we selected had previously worked on projects for this specific client and in the required domain space. The team included a quality data lead and quality control specialists with varying levels of experience. This approach significantly reduced the onboarding time, as the team already possessed the necessary domain knowledge to commence work effectively. Apex conducted a manual QA/QC process of thousands of geospatial features, successfully identifying topological errors and data discrepancies. This heavily manual work was delivered in four phases and included in-depth analysis of electric landbase grids.

RESULT

Not only did Apex successfully resolve the significant backlog of work orders generated by the data conflation, but we also ensured the client now has accurate GIS data for future use. The project was completed over $6,000 under budget and with high-quality results over a 14-month period. With our expertise, our client’s conflation was able to proceed as scheduled.
