Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Gather and consolidate data from engineering firms, manufacturers, and suppliers associated with the production, transportation, and storage of clean energy products. Present the data and make recommendations to key stakeholders in Engineering, Commercial, and Operations.
  • Design and implement material selection standards for pipeline projects.
  • Conduct metallurgical analysis and testing to evaluate material properties and suitability.
  • Develop and optimize welding procedures and oversee their implementation in field operations.
  • Analyze failures and degradation of materials in the field to determine causes and recommend solutions.
  • Collaborate with design engineers and project managers to ensure material compliance with industry regulations and environmental standards.
  • Lead initiatives for new material technologies that can enhance pipeline performance and safety.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff in material science applications in pipeline engineering.
  • Provide technical expertise in the pipeline transportation of hydrogen, ammonia, CO2, and other decarbonization related products.
  • Provide technical expertise in the evaluation of materials (pipe, valves, compressors, pumps, instruments, gaskets, etc) in hydrogen, ammonia, and CO2 service. 
  • Lead research and development projects focused on novel materials and advanced manufacturing techniques.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development and manufacturing, to integrate new materials into product lines.
  • Proficient in the use of metallurgical laboratory equipment and software for material analysis and modeling.
  • Experience in developing and conducting material testing protocols and standards.
  • Oversee the characterization and testing of new materials to ensure compliance with industry standards and environmental regulations.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing guidance and leadership in technical and professional growth.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with material suppliers, academic institutions, and research organizations.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and technological advancements, integrating cutting-edge research into practical applications.
  • Prepare technical reports, publish research papers, and present findings at international conferences.
  • Effectively prioritize workload between multiple projects.
  • Plan, schedule, manage, and report on projects with various deadlines.
  • Assist with the development of project scope documents, schedules, cost estimate, and budget forecasts as assigned.
  • Provide onsite support as needed during facility commissioning and startup.
  • Write effectively and understand verbal and written communications.

  • Speak clearly, both in person and by telephone, and listen carefully.

Minimum requirements:
Education:
  • Master’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or related field. A PhD is preferred.
Experience/Specific Knowledge:
  • Minimum of 20 years of experience in materials engineering, with a proven track record in material innovation and application.
  • Strong expertise in a specific area of materials science such as polymers, metals, ceramics, or composites. 
Competencies, Skills & Abilities:
  • In Materials Science or related field.
  • Experience in sustainable materials and green manufacturing processes.
  • Published author in scientific journals and regular contributor to industry conferences.
  • Experience leading research projects and teams.
  •  Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.

Working Conditions:
  • This is a full-time position.
  • Essentially indoors but must be able to work outdoors in project & maintenance activities.
  • Travel from 20-50% of time to field sites and offices with occasional overnight stays.
  • May be required to carry a cell phone and be available to respond during working and non-working hours.
  • The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, including credit report for certain positions, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Above the minimum requirements; not required but advantageous in this position:
  • Experience in the production of hydrogen and ammonia.
  • Experience in the transportation of hydrogen, ammonia, and CO2.
  • Specific knowledge related to the mechanical design of crude oil pump and gas compression equipment including electric motor drives, reciprocating engines, gas turbines, reciprocating compressors, and centrifugal pumps/compressors 
  • Experience and knowledge with pump and compressor station design 
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Specific knowledge and application experience as a project manager in a commercial environment 
  • Knowledge and/or application experience with industry standards (DOT 49 CFR192/195, API, ASME, ANSI, NACE, NEC, etc.).
