The Senior Research Systems Engineer
Location: Columbus, OH or Remote
Rate: $50/hr - $60/hr
The Senior Research Systems Engineer plays a key role in the Department of Research Information Technology’s work to advance biomedical research. 

 
Responsible for the engineering, build, configuration, integration, performance optimization, support, and end-to-end testing of applications and infrastructure solutions. Contributes to the planning, design, development, implementation, deployment and ongoing maintenance of integrated technology solutions that enable and advance research infrastructure. Plans and develops the detailed engineering, design, and implementation of research infrastructure and applications. Plans and validates upgrades of research infrastructure and applications in accordance with best practices and business requirements. Shares responsibility for research infrastructure build projects that range from small to large in scope, risk, and impact. Contributes to strategic projects by evaluating and researching new and existing products, procedures and/or workflow needs associated with research infrastructure and applications. Provides technical guidance pertaining to the capabilities, limitations and requirements of the research infrastructure platform and software systems, including conducting research on current and emerging technologies. Provides consultation and mentorship to junior staff.  
 
Securely designs, implements, and operates a container orchestration platform hosting application containers both on-premises and in the cloud. Securely implements, operates, and automates the build and configuration of infrastructure, applications, servers, and cloud environments. Supports software development efforts including CI/CD pipelines. Documents work and the computing environment to meet business needs and comply with regulatory requirements.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.  Advanced degree in relevant field may be desirable. 6 years of relevant experience required. 8-12 years of relevant experience preferred. 3+ years of professional experience in infrastructure and application administration and support, information technology, devops, systems architecture,  or a related field. Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills. Experience with Microsoft Azure, AWS, or other cloud platforms and services. Experience working with and supporting Linux and Windows Server environments. Experience with operations of production services in Azure and container technology including Kubernetes and Docker. Experience with CI/CD / GitOps tools such as Gitlab, CDK8s, or Flux. Experience with systems automation tools such as Terraform, Helm, Ansible, Packer, or Puppet, and programming/scripting in Python, bash, Powershell, or other high-level programming language. Knowledge of application security 
 
Desired: Database administrator experience with MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL, and/or NoSQL variants. Experience with metrics collection and observability tools like Prometheus, Kibana, and Splunk. General understanding of the software development life cycle. Professional experience with database standards and end user applications. Familiarity with programming languages and API usage. Experience working in a research environment. Experience working with health or healthcare data.
