Sr R&D Process Chemist
JOB SUMMARY:      Responsible for process development and commercialization of new products. Support a cross functional integration of activities of R&D, Business, Purchasing and other supply chain functions on a Global scale in support of new product commercialization, process improvements,  raw material economics and security of supply.  Work is relatively complex and performed independently under general direction.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Develop products defining the manufacturing processes from bench scale studies with first-time manufacturing success. 

 

Perform process conceptualization and techno-economic feasibility studies

 

Develop fundamental correlations between process conditions and process chemistry

 

Champion safe and efficient process research

 

Support stage-gate processes to develop opportunities for product and process improvement. 

 

Provide guidance for R&D during early product conceptualization to develop a testing plan consistent with the manufacturing process. 

 

Assure that complete ISO documentation is maintained on all ISO or quality related activities.  Participate in ISO related activities and maintain an up-to-date understanding of the ISO function.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE MINIMUMS:
           
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (or other relevant science field)
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of applicable process chemistry and/or engineering principles and application of those principals in a research and development environment typically acquired after relevant experience

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
 
  • Advanced degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
  • Experience directly related to applicable product or product category

  • Additive & Formulation Chemistry - Understand the chemical nature of generic and client specific component technology and how they drive performance in our areas of application.  Understand component interaction in formulations that impact physical, chemical and performance needs over product use and shelf life.
  • Fundamental Application Principles - Understanding of the core physical and chemical mechanism of applications and performance of client and customer products in relevant hardware and tests.  The ability to effectively relate molecular structure to performance in additive systems.  The understanding of key performance and failure mechanism and product requirements of the core technology areas to focus our technology development efforts.  Knowledge and understanding of the mechanical and material characteristics of the hardware for which client products will be developed, utilized or produced."
  • Experimental Approach and Research Methodology - Conduct relevant, efficient and meaningful research to develop solutions  or solve problems, through the appropriate application of experimental techniques and measurements
  • Process Engineering - The understanding of the fundamental engineering principles that impact the manufacturing process. Understand how process variables affect the structure and physical properties of our additives so that variations can be related to product performance.
  • Process Chemistry - The ability to understand and develop  new chemistries at the bench and provide the necessary knowledge to account for the differences discovered during commercialization. The understanding of how the components interact with each other.
  • External Environment Awareness - Understand and anticipate market performance industry, OEM trend,  and regulatory needs  and reduce to actionable objectives  to drive innovation.  Apply chemistry and technical knowledge to anticipate changing product usage during the product lifecycle.
  • Test Development and Execution of Testing - Develop and apply physical, chemical and mechanical testing to appropriately demonstrate and/or understand the mechanisms for our products performance and to improve the efficiency of product development.
  • Intellectual Property - Effectively apply IP, (patents, trade secrets, confidentiality etc.) to protect and extend our technical knowledge/capabilities in line with business. Utilizing knowledge of IP to ensure freedom to practice.
  • Formulation Understanding and Application - Formulate lubricant and fuel additives systems addressing specified and implied needs of our internal and external customers.
  • Chemical Analysis and Synthesis - Ability to analyze, design and/or synthesize molecules from a mechanism based approach. The ability to effectively synthesize molecules that improve performance or solve fundamental mechanistic questions.
  • Customer Relationship Management - Build strong relations with customers & OEM personnel. Combination of character & technical credibility.  Demonstrate customer intimacy and Passion for Solutions approach to understand core technical problems and deliver solutions to business, marketing and external customers.
  • Knowledge Management - Ability to create, organize, manage, and leverage technical information across the organization
  • Statistical Methodologies and Analysis - The design of experiment and the analysis of data in a statistically rigorous manner which is appropriate to the task.  The use of data to develop models which can predict the impact of formulation and hardware changes on performance.
